Second Life is an online phenomenon, a virtual world with over ten million residents, an economy turning over millions of dollars every day and home to many of the world’s leading corporations and brands. And yet this is not a conventional online game environment like World of Warcraft or EVE Online, Second Life is a “game” where everything you see has been designed and constructed by the players.
This need to design, make and build within Second Life has led to the development of sophisticated creative economies, around and, within them. Agencies such as The Electric Sheep Company, Millions of Us and Rivers Run Red specialise in creating a virtual presence for institutions and businesses wishing to take the opportunities presented by a virtual world populated by millions, to reach audiences in a significant new setting. As part of this process architectural design has become a key practice in Second Life.
(name of client) has just announced its intention to establish a presence in Second Life, your task, in this unit, is to design and built it.
You will work in a group with five of your colleagues throughout this project; drawing up a design brief, designing your proposals and finally constructing the outcome on one of the course’s sims in Second Life. The scope for collaborative working will be just one of a number of aspects of virtual environments that you will explore during the unit.
