You will be assessed on the quality of your design brief, the calibre of your collaboration and the creativity and innovation of the design and construction of your structure.
Course staff will assess your group’s brief, individually you will assess your colleagues’ on their collaboration, and a panel of Second Life residents and course staff will assess your group’s design and construction in Second Life.
As a group you will be required to submit a detailed written design brief setting out the scope of the project. This should place priority on the client’s needs and the issues to be addressed that result from the nature of the environment in which you will be executing your design. This brief should be a typewritten Word format file of no less than 1,000 and no more than 2,000 words. The brief will form the platform upon which you base your design and should reflect the results of your research into the client and Second Life. It must be emailed to (member of staff) by no later than midnight Thursday, in week four.
A design brief attracting the highest marks will have the following characteristics.
It will demonstrate an ability to analyse a wide range of information and display evidence of an ability to compare alternative methods and techniques for obtaining data. The brief will show an ability to reformat a range of ideas and information towards the development of a comprehensive design brief. The document will exhibit an ability to identify all key areas of the client’s needs and the virtual environment that should be addressed in the design outcome.
As part of your professional practice course this term you will consider aspects of team working and collaboration and will draw up a set of criteria to judge an individual’s performance as member of a team. These criteria will then be used by you to assess the other members of your group at the conclusion of the design project in week nine.
A design outcome will attract the following grades if it exhibits the characteristics in the table below.
Creativity | Innovation | |
85-100% Excellent |
The design fully addresses the client’s requirements and offers additional solutions appropriate to the client’s needs beyond those identified in the brief. | The design demonstrates an ability to exploit the characteristics of the virtual environment in novel directions. Structure offers a new approach to SL builds that would attract interest from SL builders. |
70-84% Very Good |
The design solution fully addresses all the client’s needs as identified in the brief. | The design successfully exploits the characteristics of the virtual environment. Structure would rank with some of the most innovative builds in SL. |
55-69% Good |
The design addresses the majority of the client’s needs as identified in the brief. | The design reflects the characteristics of the virtual environment. Structure on a par with a good SL structure. |
40-54% Satisfactory |
The design solution offers an adequate response to the client’s main requirements as identified in the brief. | The design acknowledges some of the characteristics of the virtual environment. Competent structure but not as good as a typically good SL build. |
0-39% Unsatisfactory |
The design of the structure does not answer the most significant of the client’s needs as identified in the brief. | The design does not demonstrate an awareness of the characteristics of the virtual environment. The structure is built in a manner that makes it appear to be the work of a unskilled SL builder. |
