Why Maths Anarchy?

I am a primary teacher based in London and have taught mathematics for 22 years ranging from special needs children to mathematics master classes. I have been struck by the reality of what mathematics is about and the wonderful opportunities presented to teachers and parents to enhance thinking skills and powers of logical thought in their children.

It has struck me that some of the things we do in school are very low level activities. It is important that mathematics is given back the unique skills, understanding, concepts and applications that are its own.

I have been fortunate to attend many helpful and enlightening courses in mathematics teaching, over the years, and I have developed this website in response to what I have discovered from many talented and wonderful people who have supported me in my thinking and beliefs. I hope that others will be similarly inspired by some of the activities on this site whether you are a child, parent or teacher.

I have chosen the anarchy label because I remember the punk era and still feel drawn to some of it's ideas and attitudes, so forgive me if this is too far away from what you are used to. I hope it will cause you to think for yourself about what mathematics is really all about.

Feel free to send me some feedback. Children, parents and teachers are all welcome. Maths anarchy is for everyone.
